The Point
A real 'Get away from it all' retreat, the Lookout was restored in 2010 after half a century as a ruin.
The restoration work was interrupted when we all stopped to watch seals playing just 50 metres away. Kayaks and fishing boats go by, and the birds provide constant entertainment.....
A unique feature for a holiday house, the Lookout is approached by wild-flower-decked stone steps and a grassy path from one of The Point lawns. Just beyond the Lookout is the old Point Landing Stage, now quietly eroding away but still handy occasionally.
The Lookout was probably built when the original 'stately home' Point was constructed around 1930. It is easy to image the young ladies sitting there reading Tennyson's poetry, and the butler bringing cucumber sandwiches on a silver tray at tea-time.
Nowadays it is more likely Father enjoying a bit of peace and quiet, having declared it a 'No phone, no children' area.
There must be few places in Britain where you can sit dry and comfortable so close to the sea.
Being so close to the sea, the windows frequently get salt spray over them, but window-cleaning gear is kept in the Lookout ready for action.
